Z plasty neck lift

Z plasty neck lift surgery is designed to address excess skin and fat of the anterior neck – the area under the chin. As the scar can be concealed with stubble or a beard, it is a much more common procedure for men.

About the surgery

The surgery is performed under local anaesthetic (awake) and takes approximately 1.5 hours. It is usually performed alone but can be combined with other procedures such as liposuction.

Following z plasty neck lift the skin of the neck is tighter with greater definition of the jawline and the angle between the neck and the chin. This gives a younger and rejuvenated look.

WHAT TO EXPECT ON THE DAY

The team will welcome you to the clinic and get you settled and relaxed. We will go through the procedure and discuss the process and sign the consent form. Photographs will be taken before heading to theatre.

Mr West will mark the planned incision meticulously to ensure the exact result. Local anaesthetic is injected which stings for a few seconds. Through the skin incisions, any excess fat will be removed and the muscle under the chin can be tightened. The skin is closed with stitches and antibiotic ointment is applied over the scar.

Following surgery you will be transferred to the dedicated recovery area where you will be looked after by our expert staff. Once you are awake and feeling well we will ensure all aftercare is explained and follow up appointments are arranged before letting you leave.

Frequently asked questions

What are the risks associated with this procedure?

We will discuss this in detail at your consultation. Swelling and bruising for a 1 – 2 weeks is to be expected. Infections can occur which are treated with antibiotics. Minor bleeding can rarely happen which should stop with pressure. The scar is the biggest consideration. In general the scar settles very well, however some scars can take a little while to mature and can be thick and raised initially.

What are the follow up or aftercare procedures?

You will be given antibiotic ointment to apply to the scar daily. Sutures are removed in the clinic after 7-10 days and scar massage begins after 2 weeks. Further review appointment is usually made 4-6 weeks after surgery.

Can I shave after surgery?

Shaving over the stitches whilst they are in place is not recommended. But once they have been removed after one week the beard can carefully be trimmed.

When can I start playing sports again?

Light activity is ok after 1 week. Vigorous exercise should be avoided for at least 2 weeks.

Can women have a z plasty neck lift?

The scars in men settle very well and are easily concealed with stubble or a beard. In women the scars can be very noticeable and therefore a standard neck lift is often preferred.
