LIP LIFT
Lip lift is a quick operation performed under local anaesthetic (awake) that rebalances and rejuvenates the upper lip. It is becoming increasingly popular due to the quick recovery and natural results.
About the surgery
As we age the distance between the bottom of the nose and the upper lip increases. For some people that distance is naturally longer. In a lip lift the skin beneath the nose is removed to shorten this distance. The result is a younger, fresher and fuller looking lip. It can improve the shape of the lip and give better balance to the facial proportions.
A lip lift is particularly effective in people with a naturally thin upper lip. These people would othewise need large volumes of filler that can look very unnatural. A lip lift provides a natural looking alternative in this situation.
The scar is hidden beneath the nose and due to its shape the operation is often referred to as a ‘bull horn lip lift’. Deep stitches are put in to support the lip to the base of the nose (deep plane lip lift), then small skin stitches are placed to close the skin.
Lip lift can be performed alone, but is frequently combined with other procedures such as face lifts and eye lid surgery.

WHAT TO EXPECT ON THE DAY
The team will welcome you to the clinic and get you settled and relaxed. We will go through the procedure and discuss the process and sign the consent form. Photographs will be taken before heading to theatre.
Mr West will mark the planned incision meticulously to ensure the exact result. Local anaesthetic is injected which stings for a few seconds. The planned amount of skin is excised, and the deeper structures are lifted and secured using stitches. Finally small stitches are placed to close the skin.
Following surgery you will be transferred to the recovery area and will be looked after by our dedicated recovery team. We will ensure all aftercare is explained and follow up appointments are arranged before letting you leave.
Frequently asked questions
What are the risks associated with this procedure?
We will discuss this in detail at your consultation. Swelling and bruising for a few days is to be expected. Infections can occur which are treated with antibiotics. Minor bleeding can rarely happen which should stop with pressure. Some scars can take a little while to settle but in general the scarring is very good. Thick (hypertrophic) scars are rare. Minor asymmetry can occur but is usually very subtle and doesn’t require treating. Some people experience dry/cracked lips for a few days as things settle.
What are the follow up or aftercare procedures?
You will be given antibiotic ointment to apply to the scar daily. Sutures are removed in the clinic after 5-7 days and scar massage begins after 2 weeks. Further review appointment is usually made 4-6 weeks after surgery.
How long do the results last?
Light exercise is fine after a few days once the majority of the swelling has settled. Vigorous exercise should be avoided for 2 weeks
Can I still have lip filler?
Lip lift makes the upper lip look fuller and more youthful and many people don’t need filler afterwards. Some people chose to have small amounts of filler to enhance the lips and this if fine once swelling and bruising has settled. I recommend waiting at least 6 weeks.
